Sykes founded Smokingpipes.com in 2000, while completing his undergraduate degree in history at Vanderbilt University. He was working part time at a tobacco store and grew more and more interested in pipes as works of functional art.
This passion drove two convictions for the pipe industry in the late1990’s —that the pipe business needed technology, and that pipes were serious and beautiful things. Learning code and business skills as he went along, Sykes laid the foundation for what Smokingpipes.com would eventually become – the largest online retailer of high grade pipes.
