Father the Flame Online Auction

Tonight at 5 pm EST Father the Flame will be hosting an auction at https://www.32auctions.com/fathertheflame. This is a unique opportunity to support the film, and bring home a unique pipe made by a couple of pipe artisans, and one of the most renowned pipe factories in the world.

We have several pipes donated by Lee Erck of Von Erck Classics, RobE, and Antoine Grenard of Chacom. You can check out more pictures and descriptions here at the auction site.

All proceeds are going straight to finishing the film. We have completely locked the picture, the talented Kevin Kyle Campbell has finished the original score, and now we just need to do a sound mix and acquire clear title to some of the historical images and footage used in the film.

We have also already begun submitting to film festivals. We are excited to be so close to sharing the finished project with all of you. We will continue to post updates on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/fathertheflame and our twitter account www.twitter.com/fathertheflame.

Thank you for all of your amazing support!

Father the Flame will be a feature-length documentary about slowing down, embracing life, and learning something in the process. It’s also about tobacco pipes.

It will delve into the modern world of the pipe culture, explore the historical journey of the tobacco pipe and show the making of a pipe from harvesting briar in Italy to a finished pipe made by a craftsman in a remote corner of upper Michigan. Through interviews, narration, and cinematic imagery the film will explore the timeless and transcendent nature of pipes.

Europe 2014 – From buried briar to masterpieces

We just returned from 16 straight days of filming through Europe. Starting in Denmark, we visited the greatest family legacy in pipes, the Ivarssons (Lars & Nanna). Their pipes are some of the most valued and sought after throughout the world, largely because of their father/grandfather, Sixten Ivarsson.

From there we went through Cologne, Germany to capture a world championship pipe-smoking contest, Saint Claude, France for an inspiring story of the birthplace of briar as a pipe medium, and finally, Italy to learn about the harvesting and cutting of Briar from Romeo Domenico (Mimmo). It was a crucial story element to the film and a greatly successful trip.

Stay tuned for more updates as we round out the filming and tackle the edit.

Greetings from San Diego

Last month we spent a couple of days filming at the beautiful San Diego home of pipe maker Jeff Gracik, maker of J. Alan Pipes. To say he was a great host would be a gross understatement. His work is terrific and we’re excited to share his story in the film. But seriously, if you ever make it to San Diego his skills on the espresso machine will beat any local coffee shop.

The story of pipes spans the globe. There are many key players around the world that contribute to the pipe world the way it is today. Therefore the next stage of the film is to raise money to go to some places in Europe that are key to the story of pipes. We’ll visit the infamous briar hound and second generation briar cutter, Mimmo (http://www.romeobriar.com) who will take us to a place where briar is harvested from the ground. It’s exceedingly hard work and has never been captured the way we intend to show it.  e’ll also show us his cutting and selection process which he learned from his father and is continuing to refine to near perfection.

A few other places we will go include a pipe factory and pipe shop in Italy, an ebonite stem manufacturer in Germany, world renowned pipe maker in Denmark, Meerschaum mine in Turkey and pipe historian in England. In all we estimate the trip will take 3 weeks and the cost for equipment, crew, food, lodging and airfare will be $75,000.
